The Classics Club

Classics Club Spin #21

It’s time for another Classics Club Spin: Spin #21.

Here’s how it works:

I am to post a list of 20 titles of books as yet unread on my classics club list by next Monday, September 23rd. On that date the Classics Club will post a number. I then have until October 31st to read the book on my list with that number.

Here’s my list:

  1. Brookner, Anita. Hotel Du Lac
  2. Jackson, Shirley. Just an Ordinary Day: Stories
  3. Highsmith, Patricia. The Tremor of Forgery
  4. Cather, Willa. O Pioneers!
  5. Styron, William. Darkness Visible
  6. McEwan, Ian. Atonement
  7. Fowles, John. The French Lieutenant’s Woman
  8. Rendell, Ruth. The Crocodile Bird
  9. Agee, James. A Death in the Family
  10. Vonnegut, Kurt. Cat’s Cradle
  11. Howard, Elizabeth Jane. The Long View
  12. Piercy, Marge. Woman on the Edge of Time
  13. Connell, Evan S. Mr. Bridge
  14. James, Henry. The Beast in the Jungle
  15. Dostoevsky, Fyodor. Crime and Punishment
  16. Wharton, Edith. Ghost Stories
  17. Jewett, Sarah Orne. The Country of the Pointed Firs

And now, we wait.

The lucky winner is #5. So I will be reading Darkness Visible by William Styron by October 31st.

I’d love to get Crime & Punishment, which would be a rereading for me. I read it about 50 years ago in my freshman English survey course in college. But #16 would allow me to do double duty (CC Spin & Halloween) with a single book. But anything is fine. I put on my spin list only the books from my complete list that I most want to read.

I didn’t know whether to start with Mr. or Mrs., but I intend to read them both eventually. I put Mr. on this list thinking that, if it’s the lucky number, I’ll read both books sequentially. Thanks for the heads up!

  1. Ooo Mary we both have Far From the Madding Crowd on our lists, but unfortunately at different numbers! What a shame otherwise if it had been the result we could have read it together. Oh well, good luck with the Spin! 🙂

Maybe one of us will get it this time. If it’s you, please let me know how your reading goes.

I’m glad to hear that because I haven’t read anything by this author. This book seemed to be the one most often referred to as her best.

I’m glad to hear that! This book is on my list because I need to read more that just My Antonia by this American author.

  2. How nice to have comments working again! I would agree that of the Brookners I’ve read, Hotel du Lac was the best. And I loved Atonement which surprised me as I’ve always tended to avoid McEwan’s work, convinced that I wouldn’t enjoy it. You have some great titles here, Mary!
