Books | Colum McCann novel wins national award for fiction | Seattle Times Newspaper:
The Associated Press, via the Seattle Times, reports on the National Book Awards. McCann’s novel Let the Great World Spin took the fiction prize, and T.J. Stiles’s The First Tycoon, a biography of Cornelius Vanderbilt, won for nonfiction.

Also a winner was Phillip Hoose’s Claudette Colvin, in the young people’s literature category. Colvin, now 70, “who as a teenager was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery, Ala. bus, months before a similar incident made Rosa Parks a symbol of defiance,” appeared on stage with Hoose.

Just as the bad economy is driving more people to use library resources to save money, so is it forcing some libraries in the Los Angeles area to close or cut back on services. Ironically, “The bad times for libraries are coming just as more people are discovering how useful they can be,” reports the Los Angeles Times.

In the war between Amazon’s Kindle, the Sony Reader, and Barnes and Noble’s new Nook, here’s another contender: smartphones. Despite the miniscule screen, our phones are always with us, allowing us to read a bit now and then when waiting to meet someone or to have food delivered to our restaurant table. Apparently more and more people are now willing to trade off the larger screen of the dedicated ereaders for the convenience of the smartphone.

Best Illustrated Children’s Books of 2009 – The New York Times:

Every year since 1952, the Book Review has asked a panel of judges to select 10 books from among the several thousand children’s books published that year. The judges this time around were Adam Gopnik, who writes regularly for The New Yorker and is the author of two novels for children, ‘The King in the Window’ and the forthcoming ‘Steps Across the Water’; Jillian Tamaki, a teacher at the School of Visual Arts and the recipient of a Society of Illustrators gold medal; and Lisa Von Drasek, the children’s librarian of the Bank Street College of Education.

Yes, the frenzy has officially started with Amazon’s various lists of Best Books of 2009. On this page you’ll find links to several lists, including standard ones such as Editors’ Top 100 and Customers’ Top 100 and top books by category (e.g., mystery & thriller, biography, children’s books) as well as some not-so-standard such as Best Book Videos and Best Books on Kindle.

For me, the reading year isn’t over yet. So you won’t see my own list until the end of December. In the meantime, how many of these “top books” have you read?
