What's New
Do you love to read and discuss books? Do you often recommend the latest good book you've read to all your friends? If you're a big book fan, I hope you'll participate in Notes in the Margin. Here I will post notes and comments on the books I read. Some of these postings will be simply my reactions to the book; others will be more polished and critical reviews.

I'll try not to include information that might spoil a book for someone who hasn't read it yet, and when I do include such information I'll try to label it as a spoiler. However, I make no promises, so if you're worried about spoilers you might want to avoid looking at my entries until after you've read the book yourself.

I've discovered many new books and authors through reading Usenet groups, particularly rec.arts.books and rec.arts.mystery. My thanks to the folks who participate there with informative and thought-provoking posts. I also learn a lot from the participants in book discussion groups at two branches of my local public library. My thanks to them as well.

Please e-mail me with your comments on what I've written and your suggestions on books to be read. There's nothing I like more than lively discussion about a good book!

Recommended
Look for this notation throughout these pages. It marks a book that particularly merits your attention. (If I were rating each book on a scale of 1 [worst] to 10 [best], these books would receive a rating of 8 or higher.) You'll find other recommended works, not individually marked, on the Best Books Lists page.

Book Group Selection

Look for this icon throughout Notes in the Margin. It indicates a book that I read for a reading group. For these selections I'll try to include comments on how the group as a whole reacted to the book so you can consider whether your group might like to add this title to its reading list. (Some earlier reviews may not include this information.)

A Note about Book Formats

All dates given are copyright dates. Publication information about individual books reflects the edition I had at hand. Many of the books mentioned here I listened to in unabridged versions from Books on Tape, Inc., Recorded Books, or Audible. For most of those books I've used a library book for publication information and included the item number for Books on Tape or Recorded Books next to the ISBN. (Audible books have no identification numbers.) (Note: I have no interest in Books on Tape, Recorded Books, or Audible except as a satisfied customer.)
