Patricia Cornwell was born June 9, 1956, in Miami, FL. She received a B.A. From Davidson College, North Carolina, in 1979. She worked as a police reporter for the Charlotte Observer in North Carolina from1979 to 1981. From 1985 to 1991 she worked as a computer analyst and technical writer in the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Richmond, Virginia.


Cornwell began her book-writing career with a biography of Ruth Graham, wife of evangelist Billy Graham, in 1983. But she is best known for her series about medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta.


Cornwell currently lives in Boston.
